The first Viceroy of India was Lord Canning. He served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1856 to 1862. He was appointed to the position after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which marked the end of the British East India Company’s rule in India and the beginning of direct British rule. Lord Canning’s tenure as Viceroy was marked by several significant events, including the transfer of the Indian capital from Calcutta to Delhi, the establishment of a new system of local government in India, and the implementation of several economic and administrative reforms.
He was also the last Governor-General of India, as the British government abolished the title of Governor-General and replaced it with that of Viceroy, as a way to reflect the increasing autonomy of India within the British Empire. Lord Canning’s appointment as the first Viceroy was an important event in Indian history as it marked the beginning of a new era of British rule in India.
